Description:

The Midnight Sun, a Borhyas class Corvette, is the only vessel of its class ever designed and built. It is a long, thin starship, designed for both interstellar and atmospheric flight, hence the aerodynamic design. Extending for half the vessel's length in front of it are two long mandibles which spout from the vessel's primary hull. These mandibles contain the sensory and much of the offensive and defensive equipment of the Midnight Sun. The Primary Hull is fairly thin and wide in shape, starting more narrow where the mandibles meet the hull and widening a little near the rear of the vessel. Off the primary hull extend two horizontal wings which spread downward and a forty-degree incline, and a tailfin which sprouts from the top of the Primary Hull. These, of course, are to guide the vessel while engaged in atmospeheric flight, although its anti-gravity generators assist greatly with this also. At the rear of the vessel sprouts a single engine unit, rectangular in shape, which houses the warp nacelle and the impulse engines. The primary thrusters are also located in the rear of the vessel, although other manuevering thrusters are located throughout the outer hull. The ship's hull is matte black in colour, making it difficult to detect with the naked eye while in space. Another slightly unusual function of this spacecraft is the fact that the Bridge is located on the bottom of the vessel, as opposed to the top. A long, One-hundred and eighty degree window covers the front of the Bridge, allowing for a clear view of the stars.

Deck Layout

The Midnight Sun, primarily designed as a transport/interceptor, is quite long and thin, making for cramped space inside the vessel. The designers primarily focused on speed and maneuverability, and it is not comfortable by any means. Only the Captain has his/her own quarters, and the rest of the crew functions in two or four man bunk rooms, sharing communal cleaning facilities. The ship has five decks, each of which are approximately 2.85m in height, making those exceptionally tall crewmembers rather uncomfortable. The following deck layout description includes some external devices which cannot be accessed from the internal of the ship. These are indicated. Deck One Crew Quarters The Crew Quarters consist of two and four man rooms with bunks and storage lockers to keep personal items. Crew Facilities: These are two multi-man cleaning facilities with sonic showers, sinks and personal waste recyclers (toilets) which all the crew share. Life Support Impulse Engines Deck Two Sensor Systems (mandibles) Forward Disruptors: 2 (mandibles) Structural Integrity System (mandibles) Navigational Deflector Array (central mandibles - between them) Transporter Room Ship's Mess The Ship's Mess includes one replicator, the only one aboard. Pulse Phasers: 2 (external) Impulse Reactors Impulse Engines Deck Three Sensor Systems (mandibles) Inertial Dampening System (mandibles) Navigational Deflector Array (central mandibles) Computer Core Engineering Engineering includes the Quantum Reaction chamber which houses the artificial quantum singularity and the central Power Transfer Conduit. Aft Disruptors: 2 (external) Warp Nacelle Deck Four Anti-grav System (mandibles) Navigational Deflector Array (central mandibles) Photon Torpedo Launcher (central mandibles) Computer Core Cargo Bays Fuel Supply Warp Nacelle Deck Five: Bridge The Bridge is almost circular in shape, extending in a semi-circle in the forward portion, and then the circle narrows into an eliptical shape. The Captain's chair is located in the centre of the Bridge, with the Tactical and Flight Control located forward of the chair, to port and starboard respectively. The First Mate has no specific position, as he/she is expected to move frequently and is often located in the rear of the bridge at one of the may sensor and control stations positioned there. As previously mentioned, a one-hundred and eighty degree window encompasses the front of the Bridge, but these windows are constructed in such a manner to allow them to become viewcreens at any time, allowing for the display of pertinant information in the forward section of the Bridge. The Captain's chair has a semi-circular control panel attached to it, allowing for the panel to be swung around when the seat is occupied. This panel can override all functions on the vessel. Breifing Room: This small observation room is located directly behind the Bridge. It is rectantular in design, and possess windows on the port and starboard sides. There is a long table located centally, and several viewscreens populate this area. Captain's Quarters Cargo Bays The lower cargo bays are the central ones, and cargo can be loaded and unloaded directly via access hatches. It is in this cargo bay that the cargo transporter is also located. Note: If a device appears on more then one deck, it is simply the same device which is large enough to encompass more then one deck (ie Navigational Deflector Array) Any item device located in a mandible is accessable via cramped access hatchways, but not via the primary hull. The exception to this is the Navigational Deflector Array and Torpedo Launcher, which can be accessed via the Primary Hull.

Unusual Properties

Besides being the only vessel of it's class, the Midnight Sun possess an an additional unusual property. Due to the material that it was constructed from, it is difficult to detect at long range. The material, known as DyDuranium, warps sensor emmisions, making the vessel appear as a wandering spatial anomaly at long range. While this phenomenon used to function at shorter ranges as well, the increase in sensor technologies over the last forty years has reduced its effectiveness. The vessel cannot be penetrated by a passive scan, and the cargo bays were reinforced with this material, making it difficult to penetrate them with even an active scan. This gives the Midnight Sun an edge over most vessels, but it can be a double edged sword, as many partols find these innate qualities in a Starship immediately suspicious.

History

During the later half of the twenty-fourth century, the long and bloody conflict between the Cardassian Union and the United Federartion of Planets finally came to an end. An uneasy truce between the two long-standing adversaries was reached in 2366, and, by the terms of the treaty between the two powers, a de-militerized zone between Cardassian and Federation Space was created. However, there were many beings, whose homes were now located within this zone, who were unsatisfied. They had seen the atrocities of which the Cadassians were capable, and were unwilling to stand idly and watch while the Cardassians continued their horrific acts under Starfleet's very nose. Inspired by the success of the Bajoran resistance movement, which pushed the Cardassians out of Bajor and forced them to abandon their orbital mining station, Terak Nor, which later became Starfleet's Deep Space Nine Station, some of these beings renounced their Federation citizenship and formed the Maquis, a terrorist organization dedicated to destroying the Cardassian influence in the zone. Recruiting members from all over the Quadrant, including many former Starfleet Officers, the Maquis met with limited success. Few supplies and absolete vessels prevented them from launching any major offenses against the Cardassians. However, their guerilla tactics scored them many small victories in their war. One of the major difficulties the Mauis encountered was in cargo and supply shipment. Many of the offensive craft that they had obtained were too small to be effective transports, and their freighters, like the Antares and Merchantman classes, could not withstand any kind of attack. If the Cardassians discovered any of their envoys, these freighters were sitting ducks, and their destruction represented the loss of months worth of work, not to mention countless lives. What they needed was a vessel large enough to transport good quantities of cargo, but fast and manueverable enough to evade Cardassian warships. This vessel also required enough of an armament so it could withstand an attack by a Galor class starship. To this end, the Maquis contracted the Barolians to design and build such a vessel, in return for Federation engineering secrets. To assist the Barolians, the Maquis assigned an engineering team headed by Krael Cris, a youg engineer who had been with Lieutenant Thomas Riker during his brief forage into Cardassian space aboard the USS Defiant, an experimental Federation warship. Krael had managed to escape prosecution by the Federation for the theft of the vessel, and possessed some of the Defiant's secrets. The resulting design was a strange combination of Barolian, Federation and Romulan technologies. Like Romulan vessels, the starship, dubbed a Borhyas class Corvette by Krael, utilized an artificial quantum singularity as it's primary power source. The ship possessed two of the Defiant's 'pulse phasers', but the remaining energy weapons were disruptors, due to power limitations. The remaining subsystems were of Federation design, while the overall structure and hull material was Barolian in origin. As a detection counter-measure, the hull was primarily constructed of DyDuranium, and alloy of duranium which had the property of distorting sensor emmisions, making the vessel difficult to detect and scan (This was the reason that the vessel was dubbed a Borhyas class, 'borhyas' being Bajoran for 'spirit' or 'ghost'). Construction of the vessel was completed in late 2372, and the corvette was christened the Midnight Sun, not only in reference to its sensor stealth, but also to its quantum singularity power source, the only one of its type in the Maquis at the time. The Midnight Sun was a great success. Its stealth and maneuverability enabled it to slip by Cardassian blockades, while its offensive capabilites gave it the ability to hold its own against singular Galor class Warships. Command of the vessel was given to Arlen Steele, the former Starfleet Captain who had suggested the design of the corvette, and Krael Cris was made his Cheif Engineer. The Maquis attempted to have more of the Borhyas class vessels constructed, but the Barolian design team were all killed in a strange and sudden 'accident', making the creation of more of these vessels impossible. Thus, the Midnight Sun became the only vessel of its class, or its kind. The corvette continued in service for the terrorist organization for the next sixteen years, destroying countless Cardassian vessels and transporting millions of tons of cargo to a vast number of Maquis cells. However, in 2389, this all changed. Arlen Steele was getting old, and some members of the Maquis were becoming skeptical of his ability to command. Steele was indignant; he was beter than he'd ever been. The leaders of the Maquis disagreed, and he was told to step down from command to make room for a replacement. Steele's response was to take his leave of the Maquis, taking the Midnight Sun with him. With a skeleton crew, Steele made for the Gamma Quadrant via the Bajoran wormhole, to evade capture by his former comrades and to start a new life for himself and his crew. Disappearing into the wormhole, the corvette was not seen again for the next fifteen years, and was eventually forgotten. Even the Maquis, who had spent so many resources in the construction of the exceptional vessel, eventually gave up the chase, assuming that the vessel had been destroyed by the Jem'Hadar upon entering the Dominion's territory, and the Midnight Sun faded from memory. Until now.
